Finally, a brief review of SY tour in line with the Pop Eye Festival. The show started around 10 pm and was over at half-past 12. They played to an estimated crowd of 200. Mostly old-time fans and new to SY music who were curious and didn't know what to expect. It's pretty obvious that they are not big stars here, and it is not a major concert. Just one of those government-sponsored events but they've got quite a following. Good thing i brought a cam and was allowed to record the entire show, lucky me. Missed out on two songs though, as i need to take a pause. SY concentrated primarily on their new album Sonic Nurse. They played every single track off that album -- peace attack, stones, unmade bed, pattern recognition, paper cup exit and the dripping dream. I'm not familiar with the other songs. I still have to listen to the whole album. The crowd was yelling "kill your idols!" even before the gig started. After a couple of songs, the crowd yelled again to which Thurston replied and said "it's easy for you to say that". There was this guy beside me who was softly whispering 100%, from the album Dirty. He was with another guy, clad in tight-fit shirt and jeans. He looked like as if he was standing in front of a wishing well. He was smiling all throughout the show and making some feminine-like gestures. Maybe one of those soft-spoken type and an avid fan. Anyhoo, my wishlist would include diamond sea, teenage riot, their rendition ofCarpenter'ssuperstarandMadonna'sinto the groove (LOL). But it's alright. Their new tracks were worth listening and i enjoyed the show a lot. Anyways, so as not to dissapoint the old-time SY fans, they belted out songs from the album Dirty like drunken butterfly and bull in the heather, Kim Gordon on lead vocals. She still looks sexy and amazing, despite the fact that she's already in her 50's. At the middle of the set, a guy went up on stage and smooched Kim while playing bass, followed by another one later on. Caught in on cam. I then wondered if it had been in the Philippines, it could have been worst (just a thought). Now i perfectly understand why the late Kurt Cobainadmired this group and considers SY as one of his influences. Brilliant, awesome performance. I went home feeling revitalized.
Dear God, hope you got the letter and... I pray you can make it better down here I don't need a big reduction in the price of beer but all the people that you made in your image, see them starving on their feet 'cause they don't get enough to eat from God, I can't believe in you
Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but...I feel that I should be heard loud and clear.(Read More)
Lares are ancestral spirits that protect and preserve family lines and family knowledge. The Lares (Lar-AY) serve as bridges connecting the past to the present. In homes of Italian Witches Lare shrines were usually placed in the East or West quarters. Traditionally Lares are associated with the hearth, so Witches usually place them on a mantle near the hearth. (Read More)
A quartet consisting of 3 gals and a guy. Throwing Muses is creating their own brand of music by combining country style guitar and new wave. I first heard this band's kind of music with their single called "Fish" from a compilation entitled "Lonely is an Eyesore" and it attracted my attention because of their creativity. However, this current effort failed to continue the same fervor as in the song "Fish". Throwing Muses' album (House Tornado) isn't all that great but I wouldn't mind having my own copy.
Come on Pilgrim (Pixies)
Believe it or not, Pixies has got a Filipino member and he plays the lead guitars. They're a guitar-based band and their music is a cross between Psi Com and The Cramps. Their high-pitched, distorted guitars nakes your hair curl but on the contrary, they can be quite interesting. The Pixies don't really make great songs in this album but I advise you to listen and decide for yourself if this album is worth keeping.
The Scriptures (Christian Death)
Because of its contrasting name, Christian Death is ironic in compilling scriptures from different religions. The lyrics, written by Valor, makes one contemplate on wether there really exists differences in beliefs. It is not that we all exist in this big planet, going through the same trials and tribulations, all working towards one goal which is eternal happiness? As i went through the songs, I can only say one thing, their music is not for everyone. For some people, their music may seem absurd. On the other hand, only a few understand why this band should exist. Their album is actually divided into two parts. Side one (entitled "The Days of Yore & Nonce" contains upbeat songs with earbreaking guitar leads. However, side two (entitled "The Womb of Time" unleashes the gloom-doom-sound in Christian death making use of bowed cross guitars, haunting voices and the like. This album does not suggest total admiration towards Christian Death, but more of experiencing their music.

The Modern Filipino Music: An Ultimate Alternative
It is great to be free. It means that you do not have to conform to any force outside yourself that controls your behavior. rahter, you stand as the maker of your own actions. It may be for the glory of abilities, the advancement of a cause, the need to express oneself or the common sense to protect one's continued support in the art of music. It's music that commands the free will to scan the issues of time, music so diverse yet so smoothly blending, a soothing medicine against the rendered unconscious thoughts of "Bababaero", "Explosion" and the like that distress our ears due to massive airplays of payola-given Dj's; an alternative: THE MODERN FILIPINO MUSIC. Now, it's rising amidst the unfair practices of Phil. Music Industry. It is creative enough to pursue its course and hit the right choice of thoughts to associate with. Thoughts which are useless and meaningless unless given the appropriate consideration by those responsible individuals to whom the future of this unique music be mainly due. We should be grateful to those who beforehand did soem altruic deeds in supporting the cause. Let us do our part on emphasizing its existence for the translation of the "MODERN FILIPINO MUSIC" into its clear horizon and more elevating aspect of life. Let's extend the front line...DEPLOY!!!!

1. DISARM - The song's author and lead singer Billy Corgan was quoted in an interview about "Disarm" as saying, "I never really had the guts to kill my parents, so I wrote a song about it instead." When he wrote this song, he was at a point where he was really angry at his parents for always making him feel lower than he really was.
2. 1979 - Billy said it was just about growing up in general. He also said the year 1979 was chosen just because he thought it went well with the lyrics. Billy Corgan once joked, "We wrote this song for Michael Jackson, but found he couldn't do the Moonwalk to it."
3. Today - Corgan: "I was really suicidal. I just thought it was funny to write a song that said today is the greatest day of your life because it can't get any worse."
4. Zero - "We like to call this style of our music 'Cybermetal.' 'Zero' has six rhythm guitars, with two line-in 12-string acoustics, plus those wacky Iha leads. Tracked live with overdubs added later, this is a true mover as well as the first song that was recorded for Mellon Collie, James has always said this reminds him of Judas Priest." -Billy Corgan (Guitar World 1/97)

The ancient, narrow-laned village of PORTOVENERE sits astride a spit of
land on the very tip of the southwestern arm of the bay, blessed with
breathtaking views, a memorably tranquil atmosphere and a string of
three islets just offshore, each smaller and rockier than the last. The
bus ride from La Spezia is a frenetic affair, with some hair-raising
bends, but it gives fine views of the bay and the islands; however, the
views are just as good from the boats which depart as regularly as
buses.
You enter through a twelfth-century towered gate built by the Genoese,
who fortified this spot in opposition to Pisan forces that had taken
Lerici across the bay. In the upper part of the village is the
twelfth-century church of San Lorenzo, renowned for the remarkable
treasures in its vestry, including four ivory caskets (three Syrian and
one Byzantine) from about the year 1000. Higher up still is the
sixteenth-century fortified castello, with panoramic views out over
this most beautiful spot from its terraced gardens. Portovenere's
characteristic rose- and yellow-painted tower-houses were aligned to
form a defensive wall, now transformed into a trendy waterside strip
known as the Palazzata, which spreads out at the end of the promontory
to the church of San Pietro on the very tip of dry land, built with a
banded facade and an elegant campanile in the thirteenth century over
the ruins of a Roman temple to Venus; the village got its name from the
Latin Portus Veneris, or Port of Venus. The views from the terrace in
front of the church out to the three islands and across to the Cinque
Terre coast are magnificent. One of the rocky coves around the base of
the church is the Grotto Arpaia, a favoured spot of Lord Byron; he swam
across the bay from here to visit Shelley at San Terenzo. To this day,
the gulf has the nickname of the "Baia di Byron", but swimming is
discouraged in favour of the boats which shuttle regularly to and from
Lerici.
Boats from Portovenere also tour the three islands that lie south of
the peninsula, all but the nearest of which lie in a military zone and
so can only be viewed from the water. (Note, though, that island
excursions paid for in Portovenere cost quite a bit more than trips
booked and begun in La Spezia) Isola Palmaria is the largest, 500m
south of Portovenere, with the Grotta Azzurra cave as its star
attraction. Next is the Isola del Tino, a rocky islet marked with a
lighthouse and the remains of a Romanesque abbey. Finally comes the
even tinier Isola del Tinetto, also home to a monastic community in
centuries gone by.
